The New Pope NEW TRAILER: John Malkovich set for leadership battle as Jude Law wakes from a coma

The second teaser trailer for The New Pope was released on Sunday.

And John Malkovich’s character, Sir John Brannox, looks set for a callous leadership battle as Jude Law, in his role of Pope Pius XIII, smirks as he awakes from a coma in the ominous new teaser.

As Jude, 46, is kept alive on a hospital bed inside the Vatican, John, 65, relishes in the fame which comes as he steps into his role as the New Pope – but is clear that he doesn’t see himself as simply an interim leader.

The latest series takes up after The Young Pope’s cliffhanger ending, which saw Pius XIII confronted with a moment of weakness that threatened to destroy his papacy.

The second trailer for the upcoming season begins with John Malkovich dressed in an elaborately embroidered mitre and mantum for a photoshoot following his coronation as the new pope.

While in character, he insists: ‘Everyone in the world should know who the pope is. It’s not vanity, it’s necessity.’

Following the service, he sails through Venice followed by boats packed with paparazzi, with a voice over explaining: ‘He’s a magnificent person, but your holiness is far more volatile.’

At this point in the teaser, the pace increases, with flashes between John peering in on women gathered together around a cross, pulling down curtains in a rage, having private meetings, and giving mass to thousands.

Interspersed are flashes of him giving confession in papal garb, and admitting: ‘I’m irresponsible, I’m indolent, I’m pompous, I’m conceited.’

‘Is there any possibility Pius XIII could wake up?’ asks John, to which a doctor responds: ‘He is still alive, he just doesn’t know it.’

A close up shot shows Jude’s little finger lift up sharply and he takes a rapid mask-free inhalation as he shows signs of life for the first time, while John’s voice echos: ‘It doesn’t matter, I am the Pope.’

Brief flashes of scenes are then shown in quick succession, with a naked woman’s modesty covered by wine bottles as she performs a seductive dance.

The teaser ends with Jude Law removing his oxygen mask, before opening his eyes and smirking into the camera.

Jude first played Lenny, who became the first American pope in history and took the name Pius XIII, in The Young Pope, which first hit screens in 2016.

The latest series takes up after The Young Pope’s cliffhanger ending, which saw Pius XIII confronted with a moment of weakness that threatened to destroy his papacy.

According to Variety, The New Pope will not be a ‘second series of The Young Pope’ but instead a ‘second limited series set in the world of the modern papacy’.

Let the battle commence: Jude takes a rapid mask-free inhalation, while John's voice echos: 'It doesn't matter, I am the Pope.'

Filming for the nine-episode series started in Italy last year, Paolo Sorrentino has created the series with Umberto Contarello and Stefano Bises.

HBO and Sky announced the follow-up to acclaimed limited series The Young Pope in May 2017, with Sky Italia chief of content Andrea Scrosati saying: ‘Just like The Young Pope, Sorrentino is writing the script for the new show, but it will have a different twist than what would be expected.’

The New Pope is expected to be released in 2020 on HBO in the USA and on Sky in the UK.
