Manchester City boss Guardiola, who enjoyed a trophy-laden three years in Bavaria, has been linked with a return to the club.
And Matthaus believes it would be a major coup if they managed to lure him back.
‘If Bayern want to play possession football, there is no better solution than Guardiola,’ the club icon told Bild.
‘It would be a win for Bayern Munich and for the Bundesliga.’
Guardiola’s contract runs out in 2021 but Bayern are drawing up a shortlist for a new manager by next summer.
Bayern are now determined to plan ahead, with president Uli Hoeness stressing that they are looking for a ‘long-term solution, SportBild claimed this week.
