Jose Mourinho has hit back at Jurgen Klopp after the Liverpool manager highlighted Manchester United’s ‘defensive’ approach to the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford opened the scoring from close range in the first half but Liverpool were calling for the goal to be ruled out as they felt Divock Origi had been fouled by Victor Lindelof in the build up. But Liverpool rescued a point as Adam Lallana scored with five minutes remaining. Speaking after the match, Klopp claimed United only ‘set out to defend’. ‘When I’ve been in England, Man United have pretty much set up like this,’ said the Liverpool manager.
Everyone built it up [the game] like a mountain, but one team set out to defend and one team made the game. ‘We didn’t lose anything, it’s just a point. Let’s carry on.’
But when asked for his thoughts on Klopp’s frustrations regarding United’s approach to the match, Mourinho replied: ‘Because he never beat Manchester United at Old Trafford. ‘He didn’t like the menu. ‘He likes meat and got fish, so he was not happy.
‘They are, of course, much stronger playing against opposition that gives them chances for transitions and counter-attacks. ‘Of course, United with the limitations they have at this moment played a different profile of game. ‘They tried to be solid in the back, they tried not to give chances of transition, they always kept three centre-backs in position plus McTominay and Fred, they were always compact. ‘They [Liverpool] didn’t like the menu.’
